About Me
I'm Oskar, and I've been a software developer since 2014. Around 2019, I pivoted slightly to become a Site Reliability Engineer instead, and maintained that ever since.
Algebra and Category Theory
My interests are: Algebraic Geometry (modern), including scheme theory, plus a bit of Category Theory, a whole lot of Galois Theory, and Theoretical Computer Science. I have very little interest in analysis and other such things, and prefer to work in these worlds of discrete objects of various types and morphisms between them.
Of particular interest to me, is taking some object and finding as many bridges from it to other objects as I can. As a concrete example: A Field may be decomposed into a base field and a series of extension fields, and with the Galois correspondence you now have a bridge to an ordered collection of subgroups and a group. Or, given a group, there are a whole bunch of other ways you can 'refine' different groups (or ordered chains of groups) from it, like the various subgroup series you can get, and so on. It seems fascinating that an object can be 'represented' by collections of other objects in this way, and the resulting collections carry information about the original, though the actual process of reversing the representation can be difficult sometimes. I suspect I will need to learn representation theory at some point.
Philosophy
I'm also heavily invested in philosophy, particularly Philosophy of Mind and Epistemology. These are naturally subjects that are taught in an AI-focused university education, which was one of my interests back then.
Later I picked up an interest in the Philosophy of Mathematics as well as Metaphysics and Ontology, in particular I spend a lot of time reading about modern Idealism and various arguments against Physicalism.
Ah, and I've also got a fascination with the Philosophy of Personal Identity, that is, questions about what it means for an individual to even have an identity at all, and strange cases that arise in the context of multiple personality disorder and things like that.
Ecology
I consume almost every nature documentary there is, and any book associated with the environmentalist movement I try to absorb as well. My college courses (before university) focused on Environmental Science and Geography, and it remains one of my interests.
I spend a lot of time reading about the insect apocalypse, the environmental degradation of the places I live, and I keep apps on my phone for bird and animal watching (Seek). I'm also keeping an eye on Antibiotic Resistance, and I suspect that alongside the insect apocalypse we've got an upcoming Antibiotic-Resistant microbe apocalypse as well, especially with the almost indiscriminate use of DoxyPEP. Anyone and everyone can get a hold of antibiotics if they ask for DoxyPep which goes entirely against the doctrine of conserving antibiotics.
Veganism
The philosophical doctrine of Ethics was one of the things I had to study, and over time, and in particular after reading Peter Singer's books, I found that I could no longer support any argument against veganism. It simply had too powerful of an argument, and thus as a honest mathematician it was my responsibility to become vegan.
I believe that in philosophical things, when you are unable to refute an argument in normative fields like Veganism, you must change your lifestyle in order to suit. That is what it means to be honest.
Pencil Drawing
One of my favourite ways to relax is to draw, though I can never seem to master the delicate art of shading. Perhaps over time this will improve. Some of my drawings might be published on this blog, perhaps.
Novels
I read almost exclusively Horror, Science Fiction, and Fantasy, and of those three I tend to seek out the Hugo, Nebula, etc. awards and read through those. I have a strange habit upon finding a book that I like of hunting down all of the highest-rated books of the original author and reading those as well.
My favourite science fiction authors are: Robert J. Sawyer and Greg Egan, as well as Arthur C. Clarke and Stephen Baxter. I actually have had the honour of meeting Rob Sawyer, I've got a selfie with him and a huge number of signed books!.
Literature
I write short stories, often horror or science fiction. Most of these aren't published, though some of them are..the trick is to figure out what name I've published them under. If you're interested, perhaps I can send them to you directly.
I wish only to follow in the steps of Rob Sawyer, and publish only stories with important and significant deep ideas at their core, rather than to produce great amounts of volume. Or perhaps this is what I tell myself to excuse the fact that I don't write as often as I should.
Videogames
I play mostly single-played puzzle games, though I also like city simulator and management games, as well as cozy games (like Stardew Valley). I also adore single player RPGs like Final Fantasy, Chrono Cross, and Nier; Automata.
If a game goes viral and it's short enough, there's a good chance I'll get it and play it through, like I did for Resident Evil Requiem.
